Project Chicken

We've started a new project at the Nielsen home...raising chickens. Just a few, they are urban chicks. Josiah did the research on which breed to get. He was looking for good egg layers. He landed on Golden Comets and Cinnamon Queens, they're both Sex Links, which means they are bred to be able to pick out the girls from the boys. We just want the girls. We forewarned our neighbors we were getting chickens, one told us we better not get roosters. The horse farm behind us has roosters, it's just a myth that they are like an alarm clock. We hear them at all hours of the day or night.
Just a few days old.
We set them up in a large computer box we had in storage with all the things baby chicks need. Light, food, water, and lots of shredded paper to poop on. Guess what? Chicks turn into stinky chickens really fast. In just a few weeks their fluffiness has turned into feathers and the kids don't think they're as cute as they used to be. Now they need their own home to stink up.
All feathered.

We chose to go the recycled way and try to keep it friendly to the eyes. John came up with the idea of turning our children's playset into a coop with a run on the bottom. There was a lot of wood and other misc building supplies in our house when we moved in that we never got rid of. It's coming in handy now. In just a few days the girls will have their own home and soon we will be enjoying their chocolate brown eggs.

Being transformed into a city coop.
